Disability Culture
| No Pity : People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement–By Joseph Shapiro. This book is still in print, and still important and wonderful. Each chapter explores in detail a different significant event in disability rights. It includes the story of the sit in at HEW, which lead to the enactment of the regulations for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Deaf President Now movement at Gallaudet, and the activism that preceded the passage of the Americans with disabilities Act. This important work is a must read for civil rights scholars and anyone else wanting to understand disability in America. |
History
| The Intellectual Devotional: American History: Revive Your Mind, Complete Your Education, and Converse Confidently about Our Nation’s Past–by by David S. Kidder (Author), Noah D. Oppenheim (Author). I just got this book, and I LOVE it! It is formatted like a religious devotional with daily entries, but in this case, each entry is about a person, an event, or a cultural aspect of American history. Fascinating! I already think I know of several people who will be getting this book for Christmas. |
